Professor Luigi Nibali
MSc Perio Lond 2006, Dip Dent Catania 2001

Professor Nibali graduated from the University of Catania in Italy and was awarded a PhD in Periodontology at University College London in 2006. He previously worked as Lecturer and then Reader in Periodontology at the UCL Eastman Dental Institute and then at Queen Mary University of London.

He is currently Professor/Honorary Consultant, Academic Lead and Director of the Postgraduate program in Periodontology at King’s College London, based at Guy’s Hospital. He is also the Co-Lead of the Oral Clinical Research Unit and the Lead of Centre for Host-Microbiome Interactions at King’s College London.

Prof. Nibali has widely published in the medical and dental literature and received several international research prizes in periodontology. His research interests range from periodontal medicine, genetics and microbial aetiopathogenesis and minimally-invasive periodontal treatment of intrabony defects and furcations.

Dr Varkha Rattu
BDS MFDS RCS (Eng) MClinDent Periodontology (Hons) (KCL)

Dr Varkha Rattu completed her MClinDent in Periodontology with distinction from the globally renowned King’s College London. She has advanced expertise in the non-surgical and surgical management of periodontal and peri-implant diseases, mucogingival defects, and implant dentistry.

With a strong interest in the link between periodontitis and systemic disease, Dr Rattu is dedicated to promoting personalised, integrated care. She received the British Society of Periodontology (BSP) Audit Award for implementing periodontal reviews within diabetes consultations in secondary care. Dr Rattu has also founded the Periodontitis–Diabetes Hub, an initiative aimed at increasing awareness amongst patients and healthcare professionals.

Her research, published in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Periodontology, has achieved international recognition and earned her the BSP Systematic Review Prize. She also serves as a peer reviewer for leading journals and co-developed the ‘Understanding Research’ series with Colgate to help clinicians critically appraise and communicate research more effectively.

A passionate educator and communicator, Dr Rattu regularly lectures on national and international platforms. Through her teaching, she aims to make evidence-based periodontology both practical and inspiring.

Spend a day with Caroline and Nina, looking at how we as dental professionals can support our dental patients in health and in disease.

There is ever emerging research linking oral and general health together but when it comes to nutrition it can be a minefield of information and sometimes it’s hard to know where to start.

Caroline and Nina want to break this information down for you and simplify it, so that you feel safe and confident in using this information and equipment, in your clinic, with your patients right on Monday morning!

The day will be split into two parts, first being theory and second will be hands on.

We will discuss:

• The oral microbiome, how to nourish it and keep it healthy in health and disease
• How to support our dental patients with nutrition and lifestyle advice
• Use of an intraoral camera to record biofilm and encourage co diagnosis and behaviour change.
• How to remove biofilm clinically with ultrasonic scaling and air polishing.

Day split into 2
Morning of theory, lunch included and then practical in the afternoon.

Nina Farmer

Nina Farmer qualified as a Dental Therapist in 2013 at Sheffield Dental School.

Due to being passionate about wellbeing and taking a more holistic approach in the treatment of her patients, Nina graduated as a Nutritional Therapist in 2019. Nina works in clinic in a mixed NHS and private practice, working to her full scope, incorporating nutrition into her daily treatment and conversations with her patients.

Nina is a clinical educator for the Ikigai Oral Hygiene community; part of the extended clinical education team for TePe and the Midlands Representative for the BSDHT.

Nina is currently undertaking PGdip in dental education, coaching and mentoring.

Caroline Smith

Caroline Smith graduated from Newcastle Dental School with a Diploma in Hygiene and Therapy in 2009, topping this qualification up to degree level in 2015 at UCLAN. With a deep sense of curiosity and passion for learning, she gained a qualification in Nutritional Science and Practice in 2019, where she utilises her increased knowledge and skill set to support her patients further using evidenced based lifestyle interventions to enhance healing outcomes.

Caroline has also trained further in areas of airway health, myofunctional therapy and TMJ manual therapy where she provides tailored support to rehabilitate patients struggling with the oral phase of digestion and sleep disordered breathing.

Caroline is a clinical educator for the Ikigai Oral Hygiene community and North East rep for the BADT.
